February Program: Tonye Belinda Phillips
“A Hint of Tradition – A Hint of Whimsy”
Tonye’s Applique “Trip”
Tonye Belinda Phillips has been a quilter since 1992. In her early career Tonye’s quilts were very traditional and inspired by vintage and antique quilt designs. Along the way her love of folk-art quilts blossomed and this has been beautifully illustrated in her book titled, “Hand Appliqued Quilts/Whimsical Designs and Simple Techniques”. Tonye’s quilts have always been about color and texture, that’s what drives her passion for fabric and all that it offers. Although many of Tonye’s new designs are more contemporary, they are still inspired by vintage and antique quilts. You will always find a fair amount of hand appliqué in most of her quilts.
Tonye has lived in Camp Sherman, Oregon since 1972. She teaches quilting classes at The Stitchin Post in Sisters, Oregon and, along with her book “Hand Appliqued Quilts, Whimsical Designs & Simple Techniques”, her work has also been featured in several other publications such as “Through the Garden Gate” by Jean Wells and Valori Wells, “Transitions” by Andrea Balosky, and “Quilted Memories” by Mary Lou Weidman. Tonye’s framed art work can be seen at the Clearwater Gallery in Sisters, Oregon and her whimsical collaborative art with her good friend, Kathy Deggendorfer, can be seen at Sisters Artworks in Sisters, Oregon.
During Tonye’s lecture/trunk show she will share a little bit about herself and her quilting “trip” through the years. And, you will see, in person, the collection of quilts that are featured in her book plus all of the crazy, wacky “houses” she has been designing recently.
