Mid-Valley Quilt Guild 2019 Quilt Show
"Fabracadabra the Magic of Quilting"
Mid-Valley Quilt Guild (MVQG) presents its 16th quilt show on April 18, 19 & 20 at the Salem Armory which will showcase the quilts presented at “Fabracadabra-the Magic of Quilting”. This is a new location that provides free parking and easy access. For the first time, our Quilt Show will be an ” Open Show” – quilts can be entered by a quilter who does not belong to MVQG. As a result, this event will highlight the work of local and regional quilters.
We are grateful to our two show sponsors Paramount Sewing and Vacuum of Salem and Boersma’s Sewing and Vacuum of McMinnville. Paramount has donated a Husqvarna Sapphire Sewing Machine valued at $1,999 for our Best of Show Award. Boersma’s has provided us with a generous cash donation, some of which will go toward other awards for the show. The remaining “Best of …” awards will be cash value awards.
Quilts and quilted items will be on display in a variety of categories including Traditional, Modern, Art quilts and we’ve added a Junior Category. Quilts may be entered for judging or for viewing only. Judged quilts will be professionally judged. First, Second and Third place and “Best of …” prizes will be awarded.
Each day attendees are invited to vote for their favorite quilt. The quilt with the most votes receives a Viewers Choice Award for that day.
There will also be a “Fabracadabra-the Magic of Quilting” theme challenge Viewers Choice ribbon each day. On Saturday ballots will be tallied for all 3 days and an award will be given for the quilt with the most votes. The Magical Theme Challenge is a chance for quilters to challenge themselves, by creating a vision of what “magical” represents to them. We are encouraging entrants to be creative, using original designs, interesting or unique fabrics, threads or embellishments, etc. It will be fun to see all the wonderful ways our quilters are “magical”!
Our Featured Quilter, Marjorie McCanse, is known to many in our area for her beautiful hand applique works. “Marge” was one of the original members of the Mid-Valley Quilt Guild, some 30 years ago! Marge grew up quilting, having learned it from her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She has taught quilting through Chemeketa, 4-H, and several local quilt shops, as well as sewing the samples for some of them.
Marge has been very active in several groups that make and donate quilts and other handcrafted items to many local charities. We are all very fortunate to know her and are proud to share her beautiful work with you.
She passed on her creativity to her three daughters who will be joining her for the show. Ann Fenderson, makes beautiful quilt-related jewelry. Bonnie Sullivan (Of “All Through the Night” fame), designs fabrics for Maywood Studios Fabric Co., as well as designing patterns, and is the author of several books. Kathy Schmitz also designs fabrics for Moda, designs patterns, and has a new book featuring embroidery designs. Bonnie & Kathy travel extensively to teach, both nationally and internationally. Marge is very proud of all of her daughters’ accomplishments. She has made many of the samples and quilts featured in her daughters’ books!
This year we are including a special Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOV) quilt display. QOV representatives will be present in a booth on the quilt display floor. The organization’s mission statement is “...to cover all those service members and veterans wounded physically or psychologically with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.”
The MVQG show will include 22 vendors from across the region offering fabrics, patterns, kits and quilting resources.
Also, be sure to visit the MVQG Boutique. Talented guild members offer unique hand crafted quilting and sewing related items along with gift items.
The Silent Auction is part of the Boutique this year, but will have a display area at one corner of quilt display floor.
New this year, is a Basket Walk. As part of admission, each attendee will receive a ticket for the Basket Walk. Additional Basket Walk tickets will be available for purchase. A variety of very special, themed baskets donated by local businesses and guild members will be included in the basket walk.
The gorgeous 2019 queen size Raffle Quilt is ”Enchanted Bouquets”, an original quilt designed and pieced by Dianne Nordyke; appliqued by Margie Bergan, Joyce Bolls, Michele Byrum, Jan Kucharick and Marge McCanse; and quilted by Cynthia Shaw. Raffle tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. The raffle winner will be drawn on Saturday afternoon.
